Rooted
This whole week was about the distance between knowing and doing, and I felt it as a dad the entire time.
The Week in Review
We started with the man who looks intently in the mirror and then walks away and forgets his own face, and we named the goal for the week: be doers, not hearers only.
We learned to ask God for wisdom instead of white-knuckling our decisions alone.
Then we walked through three convictions that can genuinely change a life. Integrity, who you are in the two-second decisions no one else will ever see. Stewardship, being faithful with the small, unseen things, because that is the honest preview of the big ones. And faith, acting on what God has said before you can see how the story ends.
And we sat with the hard mercy that sometimes a scar teaches what a lecture never could.
You can’t lecture a conviction into a kid.
What Hit Me as a Father
Here is what landed on me this week and would not leave. I have four sons, ages thirteen to twenty-one, and over the years I have given them somewhere in the neighborhood of ten thousand lectures. And I have watched most of them bounce right off, in exactly the same way the lectures aimed at me bounced off when I was their age.
You cannot lecture a conviction into a kid. It does not transfer that way. They do not ultimately become what we say to them across the dinner table. They become what they watch us actually live, over years, in the small and unseen moments when we did not even realize they were paying attention. And if I am honest, some convictions they are only ever going to get the way I got most of mine. Through their own scars, learned the hard way, while I stand close by and refuse to leave.
The Real Question
Which means the real question this week was never actually about my boys at all. It was about me. Are my convictions something I talk a good game about, or something my sons could watch me quietly live out on an ordinary Tuesday, when nothing is on the line and no one is applauding?
That is what it means to be rooted. Not roots you describe, but roots that are actually down in the ground, holding, producing something real above the surface that the people around you can see and taste. Convictions lived out over time. That is the whole thing. Don’t just hear it. Live it.
Let your lifesong sing.
