He’s Praying for You

In the worst of it, the thing that got to her most was not the trouble itself. It was the feeling that she was completely on her own in it.

She was straining, doing everything within her power to keep her family’s boat from going under, and by every measure she could see, getting nowhere. But the loneliest part was not the exhaustion. It was the slow, creeping sense that God had checked out. That he had sent her into this season and then gone quiet, off somewhere else, no longer watching, no longer involved. She did not doubt that God existed. She just felt, deep down, unseen by him.

The loneliest part wasn’t the storm. It was feeling unseen.

Where He Actually Was

Then she paid attention to something the story of the storm quietly tells us. While the disciples were out on the water fighting for their lives without him, where exactly was Jesus?

He was praying. While they strained at the oars in the dark, he was up on that mountain praying for them. He was not distracted. He was not gone. He was not indifferent to the boat. He had them in view the entire time, and he was doing the single most powerful thing anyone could have done for them. He was taking them to the Father.

What He’s Doing Right Now

And this is where it stops being an old story about somebody else and becomes about you. Because that is not just what Jesus did on one mountain two thousand years ago. It is what he is doing for you, at this exact moment.

Interceding. Right now, from the throne, Jesus is praying for you by name. When you feel most forgotten in your storm, most invisible, most alone at the oars, the truth is the opposite of what it feels like. You are being prayed for by the one person in the universe whose prayers are always, without a single exception, heard. You are not straining alone in the dark. You are being carried by a prayer you cannot hear. Keep your eyes on Him, not the wind.
