People are aligning behind different teachers and arguing about who deserves the credit. His response is almost shockingly simple: none of us grew anything. We showed up and did our part. The Greek word for “growth” here is auxanō (αὐξάνω), a word describing organic, living increase. It appears again in Acts 12:24 when the early church itself was growing. The kind of increase that comes from the inside out, not the outside in. Paul could plant. Apollos could water. But neither of them could make a seed split open. That was never their job. And it isn’t ours.

The Proverbs say it plainly: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” (Proverbs 18:21, ESV) The Hebrew word for “power” is yad, the word for “hand.” Life and death are literally in the hand of the tongue. We are holding something right now. The question is what we do with it.

This week we’re sitting with one uncomfortable question: what is the one word someone in our life is waiting to hear right now?
