Everyone keeps telling her this is the happiest time of her life. Her sister says it. The women at church say it. Strangers in the grocery store say it.

She loves him. She would do anything for him. And she feels nothing but heavy.

She has not slept more than three hours in a row since he was born. She cries in the shower some mornings so her husband will not hear. She looks at the baby and waits for the feeling everybody described to her, and what comes instead is a kind of gray.

What God did first

On Sunday we read what God did for Elijah when he was at the end of himself. It was not a lecture.

Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”1 Kings 19:5 (BSB)

And he looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank and lay down again.1 Kings 19:6 (BSB)

Sleep. Then food. Then more sleep. The angel did not ask Elijah to pray harder or to have a better attitude. The body came first.

In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for bread to eat—for He gives sleep to His beloved.Psalm 127:2 (BSB)

She had been treating sleep like something she had to earn. Like the good moms did not need it.

She answered it honestly

So she let her mother-in-law take the night feeding. That was harder than it sounds. It felt like admitting she could not do it.

And at her six-week checkup, the nurse handed her a questionnaire about how she has been feeling. She had planned her answers in the car. Mostly fine. Sometimes tired.

She sat there with the pen and answered it honestly instead.

Her doctor read it, sat down, and talked to her for a long time. She said it was not her fault, that there was help for it, and that she was glad she had answered honestly. She referred her to a counselor. The next week, she went.

That was faith. Not a backup plan for when faith did not work. She prayed that whole week, and part of the answer to her prayer was a doctor who asked the right questions.

What it cost: the picture she had carried for years of the kind of mother she was going to be, the one who glowed through all of it. And the look on her mother-in-law’s face that first night, which might have been judgment or might have been worry. She still does not know which.

Asking for help was not the opposite of trusting God. It was how she did it.

If you are thinking about ending your life, please tell someone today. In the US, call or text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org.
