Four girls she had been friends with since sixth grade gradually stopped including her. There was no fight. Nobody can point to a day. One week she was in the group chat that mattered and then she was mostly in a different one, and then people started having plans she heard about afterward.

Teenagers do this to each other and it is old as dirt and every adult reading this survived some version of it. It is also, right now, the central fact of her life, and I would ask you not to be brisk about that.

What she did in response is the part worth looking at. She stopped going places. Not just places those four would be; all of them. Youth group, a job at the pool she had wanted, a cousin’s thing in July. The logic is airtight if you accept the first move: if you are not there, you cannot be left out of anything.

He Is Not Sympathizing From a Distance

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin.Hebrews 4:15 (BSB)

I want to put that next to her specifically, because the obvious objection to handing a fifteen-year-old a verse about Jesus understanding her is that it sounds like something an adult says to close a conversation.

So look at the actual facts of his social life. He had a circle of twelve. One of them took money to hand him over. Of the remaining eleven, every single one ran when it got difficult, and the one who had been loudest about staying told three different people he had never met the man. That is not a general sympathy for human difficulty. That is the specific experience of finding out which of your people are your people.

And he did not stop showing up afterward. He went and found them.

A Direction of Travel

Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.Hebrews 4:16 (BSB)

Approach. The whole instruction is a direction, and it is the exact opposite of the direction she has been traveling since February. Everything about being frozen out teaches you to go the other way, and it teaches it efficiently, because withdrawing genuinely does reduce the pain in the short run.

Hurt will push you away from the thing you actually want, and it will feel like wisdom while it does it.

That is what makes this one hard to talk anyone out of. She is not wrong that staying home is safer. She is wrong about what it costs, and the cost does not show up for a while.

What It Cost

She went to a youth group night in October. Not the four girls; a different crowd, people she half knows from school and does not have history with.

She sat in her mom’s car in the parking lot for a while first. Her mom could see the car from the house, which tells you how close it was and how long she sat there. Then she went in and stood near the door for the first twenty minutes with her phone out, doing the thing everyone does.

She stayed ninety minutes. She reported that it was awkward and that she did not have a great time, and I believe both of those, and neither of them is the point. She walked into a room where she might have been left out, and she did it on purpose, knowing exactly how that feels because she has been feeling it since February.

The jacket was not on the hook that Friday. It is going back on some Fridays, because this is not a story with a tidy ending and she is fifteen. But she is going again next week.

Open Hands · Week 4 · Thursday · HURT The jacket has been on the hook by the door every Friday night since February.
