After everyone has logged off, she opens the files and fixes the things she would have done differently — a heading here, a number formatted the other way, a paragraph reordered. Nobody knows. They come in the next morning and the work is simply better than they left it, and in four years not one person has ever asked her why.

She would not call this control. She would call it caring, and she would have a case.

Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain; unless the LORD protects the city, its watchmen stand guard in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for bread to eat—for He gives sleep to His beloved.Psalm 127:1–2 (BSB)

Late Is in the Verse

I have heard that psalm read at house blessings and building dedications, which is fine, and I have almost never heard anyone sit on the second half of it.

Staying up late is not listed there as devotion. It is listed as evidence. The psalm is not impressed by the hours. It is making a quiet observation about who the builder thinks is holding the thing together, and it puts the word vain in front of all that effort not to shame it but to name it.

And then the last line, which is almost funny: He gives sleep to His beloved. The alternative to the late night is not a better system. It is sleep.

She was not protecting the work. She was protecting her own standard, and paying for it in nights.

What It Cost

Last month something went out the way her team made it.

Not wrong. Not sloppy. Just not the way she would have done it, and she left it alone anyway, and it had her name on it when it went to the client. She said afterward that she sat with her laptop closed on her knees for about twenty minutes, which she described as one of the harder twenty minutes of her working life.

Two small things she would have caught went out into the world. Nobody died. One client noticed one of them and mentioned it lightly and moved on.

What she did not expect: her team shipped the next one noticeably better. Not because she had taught them anything new. Because for the first time it was actually theirs, and people work differently on something that is theirs than on something that gets silently improved overnight by someone who loves them.

She still opens the files some nights. She is honest about that. But she has started asking herself a question first, and the question is not is this good enough. The question is whose house am I building right now.

Open Hands · Week 1 · Wednesday · STRESS Her team does good work.
