Not the wood and cushion — the place. Who the aging parent trusts most, calls first, leans on, names when the hard decisions come. The contest never gets spoken. It just hums under every holiday.

One of them stopped competing. No announcement, no martyr speech — he simply stopped keeping the running tally of who was winning. And the others read his stepping back as not caring.

Why the ten were angry

Watch what the reaching does to a room.

When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John.Mark 10:41 (BSB)

Two men asked for the top seats, and instantly the other ten were burning. That is the tax on jockeying for position: it turns brothers into rivals. Everyone starts guarding their standing, and the table quietly divides. The two who reached were not more sinful than the ten who resented them. They were all playing the same game.

He could not win the game and refuse to play it at the same time. He chose to stop playing.

Jesus had already caught the disciples at this once, on the road, arguing about which of them was the greatest (Mark 9:34). He did not shame them for it — He sat them down and turned the whole thing upside down. First is last. Greatest is servant. He kept saying it because they kept needing it, which is a comfort to anyone who needs it more than once.

Back into the room

Stepping out of the contest did not win him the seat. It cost him the seat, in the eyes of the people still scoring. He goes back to that table read as the one who did not fight — and he lets that be what they think. Refusing to compete for your family’s favor looks, from the inside of the competition, exactly like losing. It is not.

Go Back In · Week 4 · Wednesday There is a chair at the head of the family table, and even when nobody says it out loud, the grown children are competing for it.
