Jesus has just told the Twelve, in the plainest words He has used yet, exactly what is waiting for Him in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">\u201cLook, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes. They will condemn Him to death and will deliver Him over to the Gentiles, who will mock Him and spit on Him and flog Him and kill Him. And after three days He will rise again.\u201d<span class=\"verse-cite\">Mark 10:33\u201334 (BSB)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That is the setup. Now read what comes next with no gap, the way Mark wrote it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">They answered, \u201cGrant that one of us may sit at Your right hand and the other at Your left in Your glory.\u201d<span class=\"verse-cite\">Mark 10:37 (BSB)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He says <em>mocked, flogged, killed.<\/em> They say <em>put us at the top.<\/em> I would love to be shocked by them. I am not. I have taken hard news from someone and, before they finished speaking, started arranging where I would stand once it was over.<\/p>\n<h2>What Jesus does not do<\/h2>\n<p>He does not throw them out of the room. He tells them they do not know what they are asking \u2014 and then, with the other ten already indignant, He redraws greatness itself for everyone listening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.\u201d<span class=\"verse-cite\">Mark 10:45 (BSB)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The seat is not something you seize. It is not even His, He says, to hand out. Greatness runs the other direction. Down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pull\">They wanted the right hand and the left. He was walking toward a cross with a criminal on either side.<\/p>\n<h2>Named centuries before they asked<\/h2>\n<p>The pattern the brothers could not see was written long before them. Paul says it plainly: the One who had the highest place did not clutch it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"gbi-deep\">\n<p class=\"verse\">Who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death\u2014even death on a cross.<span class=\"verse-cite\">Philippians 2:6\u20138 (BSB)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Isaiah saw the same shape: the Servant is given \u201ca portion with the great\u201d on the far side of pouring out His life, not by reaching for it (Isaiah 53:12). The seat comes to the One who stopped grasping for it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Why this week<\/h2>\n<p>I run multiple businesses and I have a wife and four sons. I know the pull to secure my position \u2014 to make sure the room knows what I did, to land the seat I think I earned. That pull is not loud. It just quietly rearranges me toward the head of the table.<\/p>\n<p>This week is five rooms and one move. A colleague takes the credit. A role goes to someone else. A family lines up for the favored spot. Someone walks back into a place they fell out of. And on Friday, the one person with every right to be served picks up the towel instead. The way back in is not the seat. It is coming in low.
