It does not matter here exactly how — a failure, a blowup, a thing that got out — the kind of thing a room does not forget. He stopped going. He said he was taking a break, then he said he had found somewhere else, and both were true enough to say out loud and false enough that he knew it.

The thing he cannot do is walk back into that room. Not because they would be cruel. Because they were there. They saw it. And the man they respected does not live in that building anymore.

He knelt in public

Notice something about the man in Mark that is easy to skip. He did not send a discreet message ahead. He ran up in the open and went down on his knees in front of the crowd to ask his question.

As Jesus started on His way, a man ran up and knelt before Him. “Good Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”Mark 10:17 (BSB)

Whatever else he could not give up, he was willing to be seen wanting. He risked the one thing our man on Wednesday is guarding with everything he has — the picture other people carry of him.

What keeps him out

If anyone is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in His Father’s glory with the holy angels.”Mark 8:38 (BSB)

Read it carefully. It is not only about denying Christ under threat. It is about being ashamed — of Him, of His words, of being publicly on the wrong side of the room’s opinion. Shame is a doorkeeper. It does not lock a man out of heaven; it locks him out of the room, which is very often the same door.

He is not staying away from God. He is staying away from the people who watched him fall.

The man in Mark lost the kingdom to something he would not put down. Wednesday’s man is putting down nothing — he is guarding an image, and the image is the security. The gospel asks him to walk back in carrying the failure, in front of the exact faces that saw it, and let the respectable version stay dead.

The move

So he goes back to the room. Not with an explanation ready, not with the failure spun into a testimony yet. He just walks in on a Sunday, sits down where people know, and lets them see him there — unimpressive, returned.

Something has to move that is outside his own head, and this is it: he stops managing what they think and simply shows up in front of them. The image he was protecting cannot survive that. Good. It was never the thing worth saving, and it was keeping him out of the only room that could do him any good.

Go Back In · Week 3 · Wednesday A couple of years ago, in front of everyone, he came apart.
