Not a misunderstanding, not a rumor &mdash; actual damage, with names attached to it. And that man has, by every visible measure over six years, turned it around. Different life. Different pattern. Long enough now that the turnaround is older than most of the friendships in his current circle.<\/p>\n<p>He has watched all of it from a distance and found it insufficient.<\/p>\n<h2>The standard he never wrote down<\/h2>\n<p>He would never say any of this out loud. He is not a hard man and he would be genuinely offended at the suggestion. But when somebody mentions how well that guy is doing now, something in him quietly files an objection, and the objection has been the same for six years.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the question he has never put to himself: what would be enough?<\/p>\n<p>There is no answer. There has never been an answer. The standard was not set to be met &mdash; it was set so that it could stay unmet, because an unmet standard is what keeps a verdict alive, and he has been living off that verdict for a long time.<\/p>\n<h2>The most reasonable complaint in the parable<\/h2>\n<p>Jesus tells a story about a vineyard where the men who worked one hour are paid the same as the men who worked from dawn, and the objection that comes back is the most sensible-sounding line in the whole parable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">&lsquo;These men who were hired last worked only one hour,&rsquo; they said, &lsquo;and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the scorching heat of the day.&rsquo;<span class=\"verse-cite\">Matthew 20:12 (BSB)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And the owner does not dispute the arithmetic, because the arithmetic is not wrong. He asks about something underneath it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">Do I not have the right to do as I please with what is mine? Or are you envious because I am generous?&rsquo;<span class=\"verse-cite\">Matthew 20:15 (BSB)<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"gbi-deep\">\n<p>This is where the week&#8217;s passage lands hardest. The scribes in Mark 2 are not villains and their question is not stupid &mdash; they are asking why a man with authority is spending it on people who have not earned it. Jesus does not answer with an audit. He answers by naming who He came for. Which means the objection was never going to be satisfied by better evidence about the tax collectors. It was going to be satisfied, or not, by whether the objectors could stand the generosity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"verse\">On hearing this, Jesus told them, &ldquo;It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.&rdquo;<span class=\"verse-cite\">Mark 2:17 (BSB)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The turn<\/h2>\n<p>And here is what he has not seen for six years, which arrives all at once on an ordinary afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The seat he has been holding closed is not in some abstract room where the worthy get admitted. It is his own kitchen. Six years ago <em>he<\/em> stopped calling.<\/p>\n<p>He has been describing this to himself as withholding approval from a man who had not earned it back. What he has actually been doing, the entire time, is leaving.<\/p>\n<p>He is not the man guarding the door. He is the one standing outside it with his arms crossed while something goes on inside without him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">The older son became angry and refused to go in. So his father came out and pleaded with him.<span class=\"verse-cite\">Luke 15:28 (BSB)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Six years is a long time to stand in a yard.<\/p>\n<h2>The call<\/h2>\n<p>So he calls, on a Friday, with nothing prepared, and he opens with the accurate sentence instead of the comfortable one.<\/p>\n<p>He says: I have been keeping score on you, and it was never mine to keep, and I have spent six years doing it instead of calling you.<\/p>\n<p>The man on the other end is quiet for a long moment. Then he says: <em>I wondered.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"pull\">It costs him the verdict.<\/p>\n<p>He has been right about this man for six years. Being right was not a small thing &mdash; it explained the distance, it justified the silence, and it meant he never had to examine what the silence was actually doing. He hands it over in one phone call and gets nothing back that could be called a win.<\/p>\n<p>What he gets is the thing this series keeps insisting on.
