That part is not in question and it is not a veneer. Something in him actually turned.<\/p>\n<p>What also happened, quietly and without a decision he could point to, is that he stopped answering four or five people.<\/p>\n<h2>The list he never wrote down<\/h2>\n<p>It was not a cutoff. Nobody got a speech. It was longer and longer gaps, then replies that came two days later and ran three words, then messages that stopped arriving &mdash; which felt, at the time, like the problem solving itself.<\/p>\n<p>He calls it wisdom. He has a verse for it, and the verse is not being abused: some of those rooms he genuinely should not walk back into, and a man who has just gotten his footing does not owe anyone a demonstration of how sturdy it is.<\/p>\n<p>But he knows which one on that list the reasoning does not cover.<\/p>\n<p>There is a man who never once pulled him toward anything. Who was decent to him in a stretch when almost nobody was, and who did not have to be. Who is not a danger to him now and never was one.<\/p>\n<p>That name is not on the list for wisdom. It is on there for embarrassment &mdash; because that man knew him before, and there is no version of sitting across from him where the before does not come along.<\/p>\n<h2>Levi&#8217;s first act<\/h2>\n<p>Watch what the man in this week&#8217;s passage does the same day he is called out of the booth. He does not relocate. He does not go somewhere clean and start over.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">While Jesus was dining at Levi&rsquo;s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with Him and His disciples&mdash;for there were many who followed Him.<span class=\"verse-cite\">Mark 2:15 (BSB)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>His first act as a follower is a guest list, and every name on it is somebody a careful religious man would not seat. He opens the house he already had and fills it with the people who were already in his life.<\/p>\n<p>The objection arrives about as fast as the food does, and it comes from the people whose entire framework is who belongs at which table.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">When the scribes who were Pharisees saw Jesus eating with these people, they asked His disciples, &ldquo;Why does He eat with tax collectors and sinners?&rdquo;<span class=\"verse-cite\">Mark 2:16 (BSB)<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"gbi-deep\">\n<p>Here is the tie between the two. Levi is seated at that table on the same day he was called, with nothing settled and nothing proven. So the question Thursday puts to a man two years into a turnaround is not whether he should be careful. It is whether the door he is now running is stricter than the one he himself walked through &mdash; and whether he has quietly started grading people by a standard he could not have met on the day he came in.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Paul dates the whole thing in one line, and the date is the part that will not leave a man alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.<span class=\"verse-cite\">Romans 5:8 (BSB)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>While.<\/em> Not after. Not once it was tidy. Not at ninety days.<\/p>\n<p>And a man who spent his life on the wrong side of that kind of arithmetic wrote this about himself, in the present tense, long after he had any need to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">This is a trustworthy saying, worthy of full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the worst.<span class=\"verse-cite\">1 Timothy 1:15 (BSB)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Thursday, seven o&#8217;clock<\/h2>\n<p>So he texts the man. Not a check-in. Not a passage. Not a link to anything.<\/p>\n<p>Dinner, Thursday, my house, bring nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The guy comes. It is awkward for about forty minutes, in the specific way it is awkward when two people both know there is a two-year gap and neither wants to be the one to name it. Then it stops being awkward, and they talk about a truck, and it is nearly midnight when he leaves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pull\">It costs him the clean story.<\/p>\n<p>The clean story was good. In it, the old life is sealed off, and the seal is the evidence that something happened to him. Sitting across a table from somebody who remembers the old life breaks the seal, and he does not get to present himself as a man with a clear break anymore.<\/p>\n<p>It also costs him a little standing in the newer circle. One of them asks, carefully and kindly, whether that was wise.<\/p>\n<p>He has an answer now, and it is not a clever one. He was seated before he was fixed.
