There was a business that did not work. Then a stretch of not talking about it. Then a silence that hardened, over about eighteen months, into something closer to policy.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody has said the word out loud since the second Christmas.<\/p>\n<h2>The number at the table<\/h2>\n<p>But it is in the room. It sits down at every holiday. It is why he is a shade too gracious about where everyone is sitting, and why he never asks how work is going, and why there is a particular flatness in his voice when his sister mentions their vacation.<\/p>\n<p>He is owed. He is <em>right<\/em> about being owed. Everything he thinks about this is factually correct.<\/p>\n<p>That is precisely what makes it so hard to put down. Nobody has trouble releasing a claim they were wrong about.<\/p>\n<h2>The man who was released<\/h2>\n<p>Jesus tells a story about a servant carrying a debt so large the number is a joke &mdash; the kind you could not pay in several lifetimes &mdash; and the king lets it go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">His master had compassion on him, forgave his debt, and released him.<span class=\"verse-cite\">Matthew 18:27 (BSB)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And then, immediately, the released man goes looking for somebody.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii. He grabbed him and began to choke him, saying, &lsquo;Pay back what you owe me!&rsquo;<span class=\"verse-cite\">Matthew 18:28 (BSB)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Read that second debt carefully. A hundred denarii is real money. It is not imaginary and it is not a misunderstanding. He genuinely is owed it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"gbi-deep\">\n<p>The story does not turn on whether the claim was valid. It turns on a man walking out of his own release still holding a ledger, as though the two things were unrelated. That is the connection to Levi: Jesus calls a man out of a tax booth without opening his accounts, and the scribes cannot stand it. Wednesday asks the harder version of their question &mdash; not whether God should keep books on someone, but whether you are still keeping them on somebody who is sitting at your table twice a year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The psalm puts the same question in one line and does not soften it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">If You, O LORD, kept track of iniquities, then who, O Lord, could stand?<span class=\"verse-cite\">Psalm 130:3 (BSB)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>In a kitchen, on no particular occasion<\/h2>\n<p>So it happens at the next thing. Not a scheduled sit-down &mdash; a scheduled sit-down would give him a week to build a speech, and the speech is the enemy here. Just the next time the two of them are standing in a kitchen with nobody else in it.<\/p>\n<p>He says: that money is not a thing between us anymore. I am not carrying it. You do not owe me.<\/p>\n<p>His brother-in-law does not apologize. He says something about how it was complicated, which it was not, and then changes the subject to the truck outside.<\/p>\n<p>That is what it looks like. No moment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pull\">It costs him the money, and then it costs him the high ground, and the high ground was worth more.<\/p>\n<p>For three years he has been the wronged man in that family. That is a comfortable seat. It explains a great deal about him at no cost to him, and it is the reason he gets to be quietly disappointed at Thanksgiving without ever having to say why.<\/p>\n<p>He handed it over in a kitchen and got nothing back for it.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas is going to be strange.
