Hospitality. The meal train. The thing nobody wants to run in July. If you need somebody, you call her, and she says yes before you have finished the sentence.

Everyone in that building thinks this is generosity. Some of it is. She is a genuinely warm person and she likes the work.

The rest of it is rent.

The invoice nobody sent

Somewhere back near the beginning she worked something out, without ever putting it into words, and it has governed nine years of her life: this room will keep me as long as I am useful in it.

So she has been paying. Nine years of yes. Nine years of arriving twenty minutes early with her hands full, partly to help and partly so that nobody has occasion to wonder why she is there.

Nobody ever sent that invoice. She wrote it, addressed it to herself, and has been making installments on it ever since.

And the balance does not come down, because a debt like that is not built to be paid off. It is built to be serviced.

What the call actually looked like

Here is the man this week is about, at the moment he gets invited.

As He was walking along, He saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth. “Follow Me,” He told him, and Levi got up and followed Him.Mark 2:14 (BSB)

Levi is mid-shift. He is holding the job his whole town resents him for. He has not made restitution, has not resigned, has not prepared anything, and has not been asked for any of it.

The invitation arrives with nothing attached to it, which is the only reason a man in that booth could ever have accepted it.

Paul says the same thing in language a woman who keeps accounts on herself will recognize immediately, because it is accounting language.

For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.Ephesians 2:8–9 (BSB)

Put those two beside each other and the connection is not subtle. Levi is the illustration and Ephesians is the invoice being voided. A gift you are still making payments on was never a gift — it was a purchase, and treating it as a purchase is not humility. It is a refusal to be given something.

And the writer of Hebrews says what the posture is supposed to be, which is not the posture of a woman who arrives early so she will not have to be seen arriving empty.

Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.Hebrews 4:16 (BSB)

Approach. With confidence. Not with a casserole.

The conversation

So she calls the woman who does the scheduling and says she is coming off hospitality. Not for a season, not until things settle down. Off.

The scheduler is fine about it, which is somehow worse. Nine years of load-bearing service and the building does not so much as creak.

And then she does the part that actually costs something. She shows up the next Sunday anyway, and sits down, and has nothing in her hands.

It costs her the woman everyone has known for nine years.

That woman was useful. That woman had a reason to be in the room that could be stated out loud and defended. She is gone in one phone call, and there is no getting her back without picking the whole thing up again.

The first Sunday is genuinely bad. She does not know what to do with her hands. She feels exactly like a guest in a room she has served in for nine years.

Which is what she has been the entire time. It is what everybody in there is.

—

Go Back In · Week 2 · Monday She has been on every team for nine years. Setup.
