It’s nine at night, the dishwasher is running, and his wife has just said something about him that was accurate and unkind at the same time.

Both halves matter. If it had only been unkind he could dismiss it. If it had only been accurate he could take it. It was both, which is the combination that gets under the plating, and she knew it would, and some part of her meant it to.

He is standing in the hallway. The guest room is made up. He has used it before, twice this year, and there is a version of tonight where he goes in there and shuts the door quietly — not slammed, he’s not a slammer, the quiet close is more effective anyway — and lies down and gets up in the morning owed an apology.

And he will be owed one. That’s not a fantasy. She was out of line and by seven a.m. she’ll know it, and somewhere around eight-thirty she’ll come find him.

Four hours is nothing. Four hours is enough.

“Be angry, yet do not sin.” Do not let the sun set upon your anger, and do not give the devil a foothold.Ephesians 4:26–27 (BSB)

I want to sit on that second phrase, because it’s doing something specific. A foothold is not a wound. A foothold is a place to stand — small, structural, and useful only for what gets built on top of it later.

Paul isn’t warning about the anger. He explicitly permits the anger; the sentence begins by allowing it. What he’s warning about is the interval. He’s saying there is a process that runs overnight, without your participation, that converts a feeling into a fixture. You go to sleep with something you felt. You wake up with something you hold.

Anyone who’s been married a decade knows how the fixtures get built. Not from the fight. From the eight hours after the fight, when nobody’s talking and the mind is free to work unsupervised, drafting the summary — this is what she does, this is what she’s always done, this is what I’ve put up with for eleven years — and by morning it isn’t one sentence at nine p.m. anymore. It’s evidence in a pattern. And a pattern is a thing you can build on.

The Hallway

Two doors. Both of them open.

Behind one is the guest room and a night alone and a morning where he is the injured party, which is a genuinely comfortable position and he has earned it.

Behind the other is going back into the bedroom where she is lying with her back to the door pretending to be further asleep than she is, and saying one sentence. Not the resolution. Not a discussion — it’s nine-forty and nothing good gets discussed at nine-forty. Just the naming. Something like: That one landed. I’m not going to sort it out tonight and I’m not sleeping down the hall.

He doesn’t win anything by saying it. He gives up the apology he’d have been owed by morning, because the apology only exists if he spends the night collecting on it.

This is the smallest move in the week and I want to be honest about that. One sentence, spoken in the dark, resolving nothing. It looks like almost nothing next to nine years of a grudge or a family that never speaks. That’s the point of putting it here. The four-hour version is the only one still cheap enough to be a sentence. Everything else in this week started out as a sentence somebody didn’t say.

What To Do Today

If something happened today — today, not last year — say the naming sentence before you sleep. Not the fix. Just the naming, out loud, to the person, tonight.

You are going to want to sleep on it. The wanting-to-sleep-on-it is exactly the process this verse is about. Nothing gets clearer overnight. It only gets more organized.

Passion · Week 2 · Wednesday Eleven years married.
