Everyone who knows him has heard the account. It runs about four minutes if he’s unhurried, ninety seconds if he’s not, and both versions work. It opens with their father in the hospital, which establishes the stakes without him having to claim them. It moves to the meeting his brother scheduled for a Tuesday when he was out of state. There’s a line in the middle about the accountant that gets a reaction every time — he didn’t plan that line, it just surfaced one year and he kept it. And there’s a pause he takes right before the part about the signature. He knows exactly how long to hold it.

Here is what I want you to understand, because it matters. Every word of the account is true. He has not embellished it. He is not a liar, and he would be genuinely offended at the suggestion, and he would be right to be.

A true story can still become a house you live in.

The thing about telling something for nine years is that you stop telling it and start performing it. The rough parts wear smooth. The details that complicated it drop out, not because you removed them but because they never got laughs. What’s left is a tight, effective, entirely accurate artifact that does something for you every time you deploy it — and what it does is make you feel like the man who was wronged, which by now is one of the sturdier things you know about yourself.

There’s a prophet in the Old Testament who did this. Elijah, hiding in a cave after the greatest day of his life, and God asks him what he’s doing there.

“I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,” he replied, “but the Israelites have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well.”1 Kings 19:10 (BSB)

Then God moves him out to the mountain. Wind that tears the rocks apart. An earthquake. A fire. And after all of it, a still, small voice. Elijah covers his face and comes out and stands at the mouth of the cave, and the voice asks him the same question a second time.

“I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,” he replied, “but the Israelites have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well.”1 Kings 19:14 (BSB)

Read those two again. Not similar. Identical. Word for word, after the wind and the earthquake and the fire and the voice of God. He had it down.

And notice: it’s all true. The covenant had been forsaken. The altars had been torn down. Prophets had been killed. He was being hunted. Elijah is not exaggerating. He is delivering a complete and accurate account that has stopped being information and become an address.

The Nephew

He’s at a wedding, and his brother’s son — twenty-four now, old enough to ask — comes and sits down next to him and says, straight out, what actually happened between you and my dad?

And the four-minute version is right there. Loaded. He can feel the shape of it, the pause before the signature, the way the kid will go quiet at the end. It would land. It has landed for nine years.

The other thing he could say is much worse to say, because it costs him the good lines and gains him nothing he can point to. It’s something like: Some of it went badly and I’ve told it so many times I’m not sure anymore how much of what I remember is what happened and how much is what I built.

Nobody applauds that. There’s no pause in it that works.

He is not being asked to say his brother did nothing wrong. That is not on the table and God is not asking for it. He is being asked to stop being the man who tells it — which is a different loss entirely, and a bigger one, because the account has been feeding him for nine years and he has nothing lined up to take its place.

What To Do Today

Tell one person the shorter version. Not the corrected version, not the generous version — the shorter one. The one without the line that always works in it.

You’ll feel how much you lose. That’s the point. The heat you’ve been getting off that story was real heat, and you’re going to notice its absence tonight.

Whatever comes in to replace it will be slower and quieter and will not feel like much for a while. It also won’t run out in six weeks.

Passion · Week 2 · Monday He is fifty-eight, and nine years ago his younger brother handled the sale of their father’s business in a way he considered a betrayal.
