He would tell you it is a habit more than an experience. Some mornings something lands. Most mornings he closes the app and cannot tell you ten minutes later what he read. That particular morning he read a line about being quick to hear and slow to anger, and it was gone before the coffee was.

By two in the afternoon he had an email drafted that would have ended a working relationship. Every word in it was accurate. That was the problem. It was accurate and it was cruel, and his cursor was sitting on send.

And the line came back. Not a voice. Not a feeling in his chest. A sentence he had read nine hours earlier, surfacing in the middle of his anger like it had been waiting there the whole time for exactly this.

He deleted the draft. He walked down the hall instead. The conversation was awkward, it took about eleven minutes, and the relationship survived it. He drove home that night with nothing rattling around in his chest.

That last part is the fruit. Peace is not the absence of the conflict. Peace is being whole, complete, lacking nothing, content. He did not win that afternoon and he did not lose it. He simply did not have to carry anything home.

Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble. Reading the Word at six in the morning is not about feeling something at six in the morning. It is about having something in us at two in the afternoon.

In the Original

Psalm 119:165 carries three Hebrew words worth slowing down for.

The first is torah, translated law. It appears 223 times in the Old Testament and the lexicons render it law, instruction, teaching, custom. It is closer to what a father hands a son than to what a court hands a defendant. When the psalmist says those who love your law, he is not describing someone who enjoys regulations. He is describing someone who loves being taught.

The second is shalom, translated peace, appearing 237 times and carrying peace, welfare, wholeness, deliverance. Not a mood. A condition of nothing being missing.

The third is mikshol, the thing that makes us stumble. It shows up only 14 times and it means a stumbling block, an obstacle, something physically in the path. The promise is not that the obstacle disappears. It is that it stops taking us down.

What Gets Diluted

Peace has been repackaged as a feeling we purchase. A candle, an app, a quieter calendar, a weekend away. All fine, none of it shalom, because every one of them evaporates the moment the phone rings.

Shalom is structural. It is whether we are whole underneath, not whether we feel calm on top. That is why a man can be perfectly calm and have no peace, and why another can be in a hard conversation and have all of it.

The world sells us calm because calm is purchasable. Wholeness is not for sale.

The Word we read at six is the voice we hear at two.

God speaks through His Word, and He is patient about the delivery. He will plant a sentence in the morning and let it sit unused for nine hours until the moment we need it. Our part is putting it in there.

Stumble Up · www.thestumbleup.com

Rooted / Week 4 / His Word The Verse That Would Not Leave Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble.— Psalm 119:165 (ESV) A father in his forties reads a chapter most mornings before…

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[18

post-549","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-rooted
["GET
