Time to stop just looking.

It is entirely possible to read the Bible your whole life, to hear good preaching every weekend, to nod along to all of it, and never once let it actually change the way you live. James has a blunt name for that.

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.— James 1:22, ESV

Deceiving yourselves. Not deceiving God, and not deceiving other people. Deceiving ourselves. We can mistake hearing the truth for living it, and the confusion feels so much like growth that we never notice we have not actually moved an inch.

The Auditor and the Maker

The two words James uses are worth knowing. The word for hearer is akroatēs, and in that world it was the word for a person who audits a lecture. He sits in, takes notes, takes it all in, and walks out exactly the same as he came in. The word for doer is poiētēs, which means a maker. It is actually the same root behind our word poet, someone who makes something. One audits the truth. The other makes something of it. God is not looking for a bigger audience. He is looking for makers.

The Man Who Forgets His Face

Then James hands us the picture that stings, because every one of us recognizes ourselves in it.

For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.— James 1:23-24, ESV

Picture it. A man looks in the mirror, sees exactly what is out of place, and then walks off, and by the time he reaches the parking lot he has forgotten his own face. That is the hearer only. Convicted on Sunday, completely unchanged by Tuesday. We have all been that man. The gap between what we know and what we do is where most of the Christian life quietly dies.

Convictions Become Character

This week is about closing that gap, and the tool for closing it is a conviction. Not a preference. Not a good intention we mean to get to. A conviction is a non-negotiable belief that actually drives what you do, the kind you will not trade away when it gets costly or inconvenient. And here is why it matters so much for the men reading this. Convictions lived out over time are the exact thing that forms your character. Character is not a speech you give. It is the sum of the convictions you have actually lived.

But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.— James 1:25, ESV

Blessed in his doing. Not in his hearing. And our kids will bear this out in the end. They will not ultimately become what we tell them to be. They will become what they watch us live. This week we trade hearing for doing. Don’t just hear it. Live it.

Tomorrow · Ask for Wisdom

Rooted · Week 3 · Sunday Don’t Just Look Week 3.
