He had prayed. He had held on longer than he thought he could. He had watched the horizon for any sign at all that God was moving on his behalf, and for what felt like forever he had seen absolutely nothing. He was deep in the darkest stretch now, the part of a long trial where you start to genuinely believe that morning is simply never going to come.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pull\">He&#8217;d reached the part of the night that feels endless.<\/p>\n<h2>One Detail We Rush Past<\/h2>\n<p>Then he slowed down on one small detail in the storm story that he had always read straight past.<\/p>\n<div class=\"verse\">And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea.<span class=\"verse-cite\">\u2014 Matthew 14:25, ESV<\/span><\/div>\n<p>The fourth watch. In that world, people divided the night into four watches, and the fourth was the last and the darkest, roughly three to six in the morning, the final stretch right before dawn. That timing is not an accident, and it is not throwaway detail. Jesus did not come in the first watch, when the disciples were still fresh and would have been thrilled to see him. He waited until the fourth. Not early. Not remotely when they would have chosen. But exactly when they needed him most, in the blackest hour of the night, and not one minute late.<\/p>\n<h2>Never Early, Never Late<\/h2>\n<p>That is so often how God works, and it is worth making peace with now, before your own fourth watch arrives. God is rarely early. He is almost never on the schedule we would have written for him. If it were up to us, rescue would show up in the first watch, before the exhaustion, before the fear, before it ever got truly dark. But he has never once, in all of history, been late. His timing feels unbearable precisely because it asks us to endure into the dark before the dawn shows up.<\/p>\n<div class=\"verse\">I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.<span class=\"verse-cite\">\u2014 Psalm 130:5-6, ESV<\/span><\/div>\n<p>The psalm repeats that last line on purpose. More than watchmen for the morning. A watchman on the wall in the fourth watch does not sit there doubting whether the sun will rise. He cannot see it yet, but he is certain it is coming, so he waits in the dark with confidence. That is the posture for the long storm. Not pretending it is not dark, but waiting like a man who knows the morning is on its way.
