Just quietly. He stopped answering texts. He started finding reasons to skip church. He told himself he did not want to burden anybody with it, that nobody would really understand anyway, that he would handle it himself and come back around once he had it together again. It felt strong. It even felt considerate, like he was protecting the people he loved from the weight of it.

It was the worst thing he could have done.

Pain always whispers the same lie: hide.

The Lie of Isolation

Because pain lies to you. In a hard season, the flesh always whispers the same instruction: pull away, hide it, carry it alone, do not let anyone see you like this. It dresses up as strength and independence and consideration for other people. And every single step he took into that isolation made the weight heavier and the darkness closer, until he was going under in private and calling it handling it himself.

This is exactly backward from how God built us, and He said so plainly.

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!— Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, ESV

Woe to him who is alone when he falls. That is not a threat hanging over lonely people. It is a warning label stamped right on isolation itself. We were never designed to weather a storm solo. The whole point of God’s people, the church, the friend, the brother who shows up, is that when you fall, and you will fall, someone is there to reach down and lift you back up.

The Friend Who Would Not Leave

What finally turned it was one friend who simply refused to let him vanish. Who kept showing up at the door, kept calling, would not accept the everything-is-fine act. Who eventually just sat down in the middle of the mess with him and did not try to fix a single thing, only refused to let him carry it by himself for one more day.

The storm did not lift. The situation was just as hard the next morning. But he was not underneath it alone anymore, and that changed everything about whether he could stand up under the weight. Roots do not grow in isolation either. They grow tangled together under the soil, holding each other up. The storm doesn’t get to decide who you become.

Tomorrow · Talk Back to Your Soul

Rooted · Week 1 · Tuesday Don’t Storm Alone When the bottom fell out, his first instinct was to disappear.
