Underneath, it was fear, and it had been quietly running her whole life.

She managed everything. The schedule, the money, the kids’ every move, the worst-case scenarios she rehearsed at three in the morning so she would be ready for them. The unspoken deal in her head was simple. If she could just stay on top of all of it, nothing bad would happen. It was exhausting, and it never actually worked, because the tighter she gripped, the more terrified she became of everything she could not grip.

The tighter she gripped, the more afraid she got.

What Was Underneath

Then came a season she could not manage. Something entirely outside her control, the kind of thing no amount of planning could have prevented and no amount of effort could fix. And all her white-knuckling did was uncover what had been sitting underneath it the whole time. Fear. And under the fear, a belief she had never once said out loud: that it was all on her, and if she loosened her grip for even a second, the whole thing would come apart in her hands.

Here is the hard and freeing truth she ran straight into. A lot of our fear is a trust problem in disguise. When we grip for control, we have quietly decided that we are the ones holding everything together, and we are not trusting the One who actually is. This is not some rare character flaw. We all do it, every time we lie awake trying to control tomorrow.

Biblical Backdrop

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.— Proverbs 3:5-6, ESV

Do not lean on your own understanding. That is the exact thing an anxious heart refuses to stop doing. We lean on our planning, our managing, our endless mental rehearsals, because leaning on God can feel like letting go of the wheel. But the verse is not asking us to try harder. It is asking us to trust harder, to hand the wheel to the only One who can actually see the road ahead.

She Let Go

So she started, clumsily and badly at first, to let go. When the three in the morning list started up, she handed it to God, item by item, and made herself leave it there instead of snatching it right back. Some nights she had to do it a dozen times over. The storm did not stop. The hard season did not suddenly resolve because she prayed about it.

But her grip did loosen. And the strange, quiet calm that started to come was not because she finally got control of her circumstances. It was because she finally gave it up. That is where joy hides in a trial, on the other side of the grip we will not let go of. The storm doesn’t get to decide who you become.

Tomorrow · Don’t Storm Alone

Rooted · Week 1 · Monday Trust Over Control She called it being on top of things.
