A Sunday thing. Something for the people up front with the good voices and the lifted hands and the eyes closed, not for a man who mumbles through the songs, checks his watch, and feels a little awkward the whole time. He believed in God. He was not cold. But worship felt like a department other people were gifted for and he simply was not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pull\">Worship felt like other people&#8217;s department.<\/p>\n<h2>One Ordinary Tuesday<\/h2>\n<p>Then one completely ordinary Tuesday morning he caught himself standing at the sink doing the dishes, and he was humming. An old song, one he had not heard in years and did not decide to start. It was just leaking out of him while his hands were in the soapy water and the early sun came through the window over the sink and one of his kids laughed at something in the next room. For no reason he could have pointed to, he was full. And the fullness was coming out of him as a song.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped for a second, almost embarrassed, and then he understood something he had been missing his whole life.<\/p>\n<h2>The Overflow of a Full Life<\/h2>\n<div class=\"verse\">be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart.<span class=\"verse-cite\">\u2014 Ephesians 5:18-19, ESV<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Look at the order in that sentence. Be filled with the Spirit, and then the singing comes. The singing is not the thing you work up to prove you are spiritual. The singing is what happens on its own when a life is full. Last week we said it. You cannot fill yourself. But a filled life overflows, and one of the first things it overflows as is a song.<\/p>\n<p>That is the secret nobody had ever told him. Worship is not a performance you have to produce from a standing start. It is the natural spillover of a Spirit-filled life. You get filled, and it leaks out as music, sometimes an actual song, sometimes just gratitude you cannot quite keep inside.<\/p>\n<h2>The Kitchen Was the Sanctuary<\/h2>\n<p>His sanctuary that morning was his kitchen. His worship team was him and a dish towel. And it counted, every bit as much as anything that has ever happened on a stage with a band and a thousand people, because the Lord he was making melody to was listening to a heart, not a voice.<\/p>\n<p>You do not have to become a singer. You have to get filled, and let it spill. The humming over the dishes, the song in the car with the kids, the gratitude that ambushes you on an ordinary drive. That is anointed worship, and your kitchen counts.
