The flash of anger that comes up out of nowhere and lands on the people he loves the most. He hates it more than they do. He has read the books and listened to the talks. He has made the resolutions, white-knuckled his way through a hundred Mondays swearing that this time would be different. And then a kid knocks over a drink, or the day goes sideways, and it is right back, and he is standing there apologizing again with that same sick feeling in his stomach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pull\">You cannot grit your way out of a stronghold.<\/p>\n<p>For someone else it is not anger. It is the drink, or the screen he cannot put down, or the anxiety that runs his nights, or the thing nobody knows about. Whatever it is, he has the same scars from the same losing fight, the one where you try harder and harder and keep ending up in the same place.<\/p>\n<h2>Flesh Weapons Lose This Fight<\/h2>\n<p>That is the hard and freeing lesson. Some things in us simply do not respond to more effort. They have roots that run deeper than willpower can reach, and every year spent trying to muscle them down is another year of confirming you cannot.<\/p>\n<div class=\"verse\">For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.<span class=\"verse-cite\">\u2014 2 Corinthians 10:4, ESV<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Not of the flesh. Trying harder is a flesh weapon, and a flesh weapon was never going to win a spiritual fight. The Bible calls these things strongholds for a reason. A stronghold is not knocked down by a man shoving on it with his bare hands. It comes down by a power greater than the thing holding it up.<\/p>\n<h2>From Managing to Surrendering<\/h2>\n<p>So he changed what he was doing. He stopped treating his anger like a behavior he had to manage and started treating it like a battle he had to surrender. He stopped fighting it alone and started fighting it on his knees. The second he felt it rising in his chest, instead of clenching his jaw and trying to hold it down by force, he turned it over. God, this is stronger than I am. I cannot break this. You break it.<\/p>\n<p>One of the oldest pictures of the anointing is oil that breaks a heavy yoke off an animal&#8217;s neck, a burden lifted not by the animal&#8217;s struggle but from the outside. That is what slowly started to happen in him. Not overnight, and not perfectly. There were still bad days. But the grip began to loosen. The thing he could never break by force started breaking under a power that was not his own.<\/p>\n<p>That is what it means to be anointed for the fight. You quit trying to be the weapon and start handing the battle to the Spirit.
