Just him and God, nobody else’s business.

He was saved. He believed it down to the ground. He prayed, in his head, alone, on his own time. But it stayed sealed up inside him, a quiet personal arrangement he never let spill out into the open, not even at his own kitchen table. His wife knew he believed. His kids assumed it. But not one of them had ever heard him pray out loud, or seen the inside of his faith, or tasted a drop of what was in there.

He thought it was humility. It was hoarding.

He told himself this was humility. He was just not the type to make a show of it. But somewhere underneath, it was closer to hoarding. He was treating the Spirit of God like a private ticket to heaven tucked in his wallet, instead of a spring that was always meant to overflow and run downhill to everyone nearby.

People Dying of Thirst Beside a Well

What finally cracked it open was simply seeing how thirsty the people closest to him were. His wife, worn thin and running on empty herself. His kid, quietly going under in a hard season. People parched and struggling right next to a man who was sitting on a well and keeping the lid screwed on tight.

So he started letting it out. He prayed out loud at dinner, clumsy and self-conscious the first few times. He told his kids, in plain words, what God was actually doing in him. He stopped guarding the thing and started giving it away. And the strangest thing happened, the thing that makes no sense until you live it. The more it poured out of him, the fuller he felt. Because that is exactly how this particular water works.

Biblical Backdrop

Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, “Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”— John 7:38, ESV

Rivers. Not a sealed cup, not a private reservoir, not a ticket kept dry in a pocket. Rivers, flowing out of a person and onto everyone within reach. That is what the filling was always for. The Spirit did not come to be stored. He came to spill. And notice where the riverbank starts. Not across the world. At your own table, with the thirsty people who share your last name.

You were never the source. You were always meant to be a channel the water runs through on its way to somebody else.

Tomorrow · You Can’t Fill Yourself · The Week in Review

The Spirit-Filled Life · Week 2 · Friday Rivers For most of his life his faith was a private thing.
