Comfortable. She went to church most weeks, believed the right things, said grace at the table, never made a fuss. But somewhere across the busy years the fire had quietly dropped to a pilot light, and she had stopped noticing the difference. She was not running from God. She was running on fumes and calling it a normal Christian life.

She was running on fumes and called it normal.

Her Kid Got Hungry

Then her teenager got hungry for God. Really hungry. She started reading on her own, late, without being told. She asked her questions she could not answer. He prayed like she actually expected someone to be listening. She had a light in her that she could not remember feeling in herself for longer than she wanted to admit.

The day she was baptized she stood there watching, proud and quietly undone at the same time, and a thought landed on her that she could not shake loose. My child has a closer walk with God right now than I do. When did I let mine get this dry?

It was not condemnation. Condemnation crushes you and leaves you on the floor. This was a tug, the kind that wakes a sleeping thirst back up and gets you moving toward water. God has a way of not playing fair. He will set a child in your own house who burns for him, not to shame you, but to remind you how much you used to.

Biblical Backdrop

As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.— Psalm 42:1-2, ESV

A deer that has run a long way, sides heaving, panting for the stream. That is not a calm, comfortable, Sunday-morning faith. That is need. That is thirst that aches. And it dawned on her, watching her son, that she had not panted for God like that in years. She had been sipping just enough to get by and calling it full.

Here is the mercy in it. Remembering that you are thirsty is not failure. It is the first step back to the water. The deer does not apologize for being thirsty. It runs to the stream. You were never the source, and the day you feel the old thirst come back is the day you start moving toward the One who is.

Tomorrow · Rivers

The Spirit-Filled Life · Week 2 · Thursday The Thirst Returns She had been coasting so long she had forgotten she was ever thirsty.
