The provider, the fixer, the steady hand who carries the weight so nobody else has to feel it. He gets up early, does more than his share, rarely complains, and pours himself out for his wife and his kids and anyone who knocks on the door. From the outside it looks exactly like strength, and for years it has been the thing he is most quietly proud of.

He is pouring out what he no longer has.

But lately he has been running on fumes. Short with the kids over nothing. Flat and far away at dinner. Snapping at his wife and hating himself for it ten seconds later. He cannot understand it, because by every measure he is doing the right things. He is trying harder than he ever has.

Pouring From Empty

That is exactly the problem. He is pouring out patience and kindness and steadiness that he does not actually possess, from a cup he never stops to refill, because underneath it all he believes the whole thing depends on him. Rest is for people who cannot handle it. Asking for help is admitting weakness. Slowing down to be filled feels like quitting. So he white-knuckles it on willpower and waits for the day the tank finally hits empty.

What he has never let himself believe is that the strong one is allowed to be empty. That the cup is supposed to be refilled, and refilled by God, and that there is no shame in holding it out.

Biblical Backdrop

Listen to who the invitation is actually for.

Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.— Isaiah 55:1, ESV

Come, everyone who thirsts. Come, you who have no money. The water is not handed out to the strong and the self-sufficient. It is handed out to the thirsty and the broke, to the ones who have finally run out of their own supply. And the very next line asks the question this man needs to hear: why do you spend your money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Why pour your whole self into a way of living that leaves you dry?

You do not earn the water by being strong enough. You receive it by admitting you are thirsty.

The Wheels Came Off

This week the tank hit empty. It was a small thing, a spilled drink, a normal mess, and he came apart over it in a way the moment did not deserve, right in front of his kids. He saw the flicker of fear on their faces. He saw them go quiet and careful around him. And something in him finally broke open and admitted what he had been refusing to say for a long time. He was empty. He had been empty for years. And no amount of trying harder was going to fill him.

That is not the end of his story. That is the beginning of it. A cup that admits it is empty is finally in a position to be filled. You or your family were never the source.

Tomorrow · Broken Cisterns

The Spirit-Filled Life · Week 2 · Monday Running on Empty He is the one everybody leans on, and the cup is empty.
