He never made it his thing.

He does not corner people by the coffee machine. He does not leave tracts in the break room. He does not steer every conversation toward the gospel or announce that he will be praying about the quarterly numbers. For a long stretch of years he genuinely wondered whether that made him a coward. Whether he was the Nicodemus who only comes at night, keeping the single most important thing about himself carefully off the table at the office, ashamed when it counted.

Was he just the Nicodemus who only comes at night?

What They Actually Know

But there is a whole catalog of things his coworkers know about him, even if not one of them could tell you where it comes from.

They know he does not join the pile-on when somebody gets thrown under the bus in a meeting. They know he is the same man whether the boss is in the room or not. They know he keeps his word, owns his mistakes out loud, and does not return fire when someone wrongs him, which in that building makes him almost strange. They know he is patient with the new hire everyone else quietly wrote off in week two. They have watched him absorb an unfair amount of blame without retaliating and then keep treating the person who blamed him with respect.

And a couple of them have caught him, once or twice, reading a small worn Bible at his desk over his lunch break. He never made a thing of it. Never looked up and used it as an opening. Never brought it up afterward. He just closed it when lunch was over and got back to work. But they saw. People always see the things you are not performing.

Biblical Backdrop

Jesus did not say to announce your light. He said to let it be seen.

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.— Matthew 5:16, ESV

Notice what they are meant to see. Not your slogans. Your good works. Your conduct. The light is not a speech you give; it is a life they watch. And the specific things they had been watching in this man, the not-retaliating, the patience, the steadiness, the refusal to pile on, the honesty under pressure, are not random virtues. They are the fruit of the Spirit. The old framework of flesh versus spirit, walked out at a desk: where the flesh would have returned fire, joined the gossip, protected itself, the Spirit produced love, patience, and self-control instead. His coworkers had been reading a five-year sermon, and not one word of it was spoken.

This is the answer to his fear that he was just a nighttime believer. Nicodemus came out of the dark in the end not with an argument but with an act, seventy-five pounds of devotion carried in daylight. This man had been carrying his own quiet weight in the open for years. The light was on the whole time. He just was not pointing at it.

The Knock on His Desk

Last week the coworker going through a brutal divorce did not go to the loud Christian two floors up, the one with the verses in his email signature and the opinions about everything. He came to the quiet man’s desk, late in the afternoon, and asked if they could talk somewhere.

The quiet man took him to get coffee and mostly listened. Near the end, he asked the coworker, honestly, why he had come to him of all people. The coworker thought about it and said, “I don’t know. You just seem like you have something the rest of us don’t.”

Years of patience had said what no sermon could have. The restraint, the steadiness, the not-pushing, the fruit quietly showing up day after day, that was the witness the whole time. The patience was the faith, and someone finally came looking for its source. Live it in the open; God does the drawing.

Tomorrow · Her Knees Were the Battlefield

Get Up and Walk · Week 5 · Wednesday The Light They Can See Nobody at his work knows him as the religious guy.
