The Spirit-Filled Life · Week 3 · Saturday Recap
Anointed
This week we watched the anointing show up in five completely ordinary rooms.
Five Ordinary Rooms
A man who said no to a good thing, because he finally learned to tell the difference between being led and being driven, and the lead said not this, not now.
A man who stopped fighting his temper on willpower after fifteen years of losing, handed the battle to the Spirit, and watched the yoke start to break under a power that was not his own.
A dad sitting on the edge of his bed at two in the morning, out of words for a kid in a hard place, who learned that his wordless ache was the Spirit himself praying through him.
A man who was sure he had no gift, until he saw that the ordinary thing he could do, given away for the common good, was the Spirit’s gift all along.
And a man who caught himself humming over the dishes and realized that worship is just what a full life spills out, and that his kitchen counted.
The oil is on regular people, for regular life.
What I Keep Landing On
Here is where I keep ending up. I spent years quietly believing the anointing was for other people. The stage people. The professionals with the good voices and the seminary degrees. Not a regular man doing a regular life.
And I have four sons watching me. I want them to know, a lot earlier than I did, that the oil is on regular people, for regular life. That you do not have to wait to become someone more impressive before God can use you. That he anoints you for the actual rooms you are standing in, the hard decision and the old fight and the dark two-in-the-morning and the ordinary gift and the song you did not know was in you.
Where It Was Always Headed
Because here is where all of it was always going.
Anointed, and then sent. And look closely at where the sending starts. Jerusalem. Home. Your own house and your own street first, and then out from there, in widening circles, all the way to the ends of the earth. You do not start by changing the world. You start in your kitchen, with the people who share your last name.
Three weeks ago we asked whether our fire was burning or idle. This is the answer to how it ever spreads. You get filled, because you cannot fill yourself. You get anointed for your actual rooms. And an ordinary life, set apart and lit from the inside, ends up being a witness without ever having to force it.
So name your room. The decision you are dreading. The fight you keep losing. The prayer you have no words for. The gift you have been hiding. The song that wants out. And ask him, right there, for his anointing in that exact place.
Let your lifesong sing. You’re anointed for the room you’re in.
